Jane

He walked around to the back of the truck and yanked open the door.

RATTLE—CLANG.

The noise carried straight into the house. Seymour’s ears twitched as Jane leaned closer to the window.

The driver disappeared inside the truck.

A minute passed. Maybe two.

Then he reappeared, dragging something toward the tailgate.

A crate.

A very large crate.

Jane’s expression shifted. “…That’s not cat treats.”

The rough wooden crate thudded into view. It looked heavy and was about the size of the single-door kitchen hutch she had ordered a while back.

But she hadn’t ordered another hutch.

The driver lowered the tailgate, grabbed a wheeled cart, and slid it beneath the crate with practiced efficiency. He rolled it down the driveway and up to the front steps, then stopped.

Jane set down her coffee. “Okay…”

She stepped outside.

Before she could say a word, the driver shoved a tablet in front of her face.

“Sign here.”

Jane blinked. “Uh—I didn’t order anything. Are you sure this is—”

“Read it,” he said, already half turning away.

Jane looked down.

Her name. Her address.

At the top of the screen were the words:

RCAM Systems

“…Who is RCAM Systems?”

“Lady, I’ve got twenty-five more stops today.”

Jane hesitated for just a second, then signed.

The driver took the tablet without thanking her or making eye contact. He turned, stomped back to the truck, and slammed the door.

BANG.

Within seconds, he was gone.

Jane stood there alone with the crate.
